Henry, you Old Coon YouOther animals, good friends of the opossum really, have been largely ignored by modern political folks. For example, the raccoon once played a part in the Presidential race of Henry Clay of the great State of Kentucky. There was one newspaper called That Same Old Coon and another called the Coon Dissector facing off on the two sides of Clay's race.
Yes, one of those newspapers just loved him. And the other was not kindly disposed to him in the least. But with all that nastiness, it at least makes the heart feel glad that the word Coon was not being used here to degrade and insult African Americans, its more common use in American culture (see It Hurts). |
